Amazing way to market a website offline...?

Here's an amazingly powerful way of using the law of reciprocity in the offline world that you can adapt to create 1 person or an army of people offline marketing your website and making good money for themselves while they do it:

1. A gentleman approached my table and handed me a card.

On the card was a message something like "The person who gave you this card is deaf. This card has instructions for some of the must used sign language. We suggest you give any donation in exchange for the card. Suggested donation $2."


2. The gentleman who gave me the card waited till I read the card and looked up at him and he repeated the line on the card "any donation" politely.

His enunciation was poor suggesting that he could indeed be deaf (a cynical person might have suggested he was faking it).


3. I gave him $2!


4. He said "thank you" and signed it. I notice the first sign on the card was "thank you" so I knew what he was signing to me.


Now this is an amazing marketing strategy that I'm sure could be adapted.

Here are the strengths:

# You can walk into any business like a restaurant, hand the card over and then ask if they mind you giving out the cards to their diners. They will find it very hard to say no to a deaf person but the same method would work if you were collecting for a charity, children or any cause perceived as worthy or selfless.

# The cost of the cards is minimal. Postcard size...say 5 cents or less to print one.

Even if you're getting just 25-50 cents a card you'll make a good profit.

But I would expect most people will hand over the suggested donation.


# The card can lead to a website that has some kind of lead capture and upsell.

This is the real power of the marketing method in my opinion.

If you create a system like this that works you can teach it to someone, have them do it and keep the money they collect.

You get the leads to your website...free, high quality lead generation.


# If you give something of value (like the card teaching sign language) you're also performing a valuable service to the people who get it.

Neat idea all round harnessing the power of reciprocity.

Think of how you can create an information card in your niche that has value then start handing it out yourself or get cute kids to make money handing it out, get someone who wants to make extra cash handing it out etc.

Should You Email A List That's A Year Old?

Here's a great question:

"If you have an email list on your autoresponder service that you haven't contacted for 3 months, 6 months or even a year or more should you email them?"

My answer:

Absolutely you should email this list.

No matter which way you look at it a targeted list of email subscribers is a potentially valuable asset.

But before you send out an email think through what your subscribers are likely to think when they get that first email from you after so long:

1. Will they have forgotten about you and think the email is spam?

(Be sure to remind them of why they got on the list, what you've given them in the past and why they should read this email).

Acknowledge the fact that you haven't emailed them for a while...that's important.

It helps people go through the process of reminding themselves about who you are and why they signed up with you.


2. Can you design a sequence of emails that will appeal to these subscribers?

If your first email is a pitch it's likely you'll get a lot of unsubscribes and most likely reduce the responsiveness of your list.

A large list of people who never buy from you is not especially useful.

Perhaps you can plan on sending your subscribers quality content once or twice before you promote any product.

You'll build some trust and be more likely to hold on to your subscribers and keep them buying from you long term.


3. Consider anything else that might be an issue for the subscribers on this list.

Really put yourself in their shoes....how they feel, what they really want.

If it's possible call up a couple of your subscribers on the phone or email them personally and get some feedback about how they're going, what they think of you (if they even remember you), what's important to them and what kinds of things they'd like to get from you in the future.

You could even email them with a gift offer if they're kind enough to fill out a survey for you.

That will help you devise a strategy that's likely to be successful.

Placing Order Buttons In Online Sales Letters

Placement of order buttons and links on your sales letter is an interesting area.

You want to think along the lines of where your prospect is coming from.

In many cases you actually don't know how far along in the sales process your prospect is.

In some cases they'll come from an email written by someone they trust who has told them to buy your product.

In that case you can test adding an order button in the first fold (right after your headline, subhead etc at the top of the sales letter).

I've done this successfully with several sales letter and achieved over 20% response rates (in fact in one sales letter I got a 35% response rate with a statistically significant number of sales).


But not everyone arriving at your sales page is going to be ready to buy.

Many will need a whole lot more information.

So with order buttons or links earlier in your copy (or in the middle) you're giving people who are ready to buy a chance to do it without having to look for the order button.

But you're also still giving the people who need more information the chance to get that too.

Generally speaking once you've given a call to action and told your prospect to buy you want to make it very easy for them to do it so you might have an order button every screen or two through your P.S. or any information after your first call to action.

Testing will help you determine what works for your specific sales letter.

The Copywriting Clients You Don't Need

Some people ask me why I avoid corporate copywriting clients.

First I tell them that I'm not your average copywriter and I prefer to deal directly with the person who makes decisions.

But a more accurate description would be that I can't stand the whole "copywriting by committee" approach that things degenerate into in large corporations.

Everyone seems to have an opinion (nearly always unqualified) and you usually end up with a great piece of copy reduced to a pile of crap after trying to appease the legal department and everyone up and down the chain of command.

The bottom line is I want my sales letters to convert the maximum number of prospects into buyers and that's just not possible when you have a whole pile of unqualified (or worse still half-qualified) people adding their opinions and ideas.

Think about it this way...

A sales letter is salesmanship in print or salesmanship online.

Can you imagine trying to go and sell someone a product and taking half a dozen people with you...everyone interjecting in the middle of the sales presentation with another great idea or insight?

Do you really think that would work?

I know it doesn't work because I've been a sales trainer and had to tell the people I was training to just shut up and listen through the whole presentation.

Every word of a sales presentation and every answer is finely crafted and a single word in the wrong place can be amazingly destructive.

You need one sales letter written by one copywriter with one style.

That will usually get you the best response.

Does that mean you should be closed to ideas and suggestions?

Definitely not...but as the copywriter YOU make the final decisions on the sales copy.

When you have a whole pile of people who are convinced their ideas are critically important and should be added in and have some kind of power in forcing you to make changes then you're headed for trouble.

Copy by committee doesn't work and if clients start trying to use this method to change your sales copy it's best just to walk away.

They'll be throwing away their money on the finished sales letter anyway.

3 Tips For Building An Ecommerce Site

Most websites never make any significant sales.

In fact most so called "ecommerce" sites are costly brochures for overpriced web designers.

If you want your ecommerce site to make real sales and become a genuine lead generator and profit stream for your business you need to give up the idea of making your website look fancy and embrace the idea of using your website as a selling tool.

The first tip to building an ecommerce site that makes real sales is understanding the strengths and weaknesses of internet marketing and websites.

Online you can deliver a huge amount of valuable content to your prospects and clients at minimal cost.

You can pre-educate prospects with text, images, streaming audio and video.

You can send your prospects a series of emails one after the other leading them to this content and you can automate the whole process.

In the same way you can send clients who've just bought from you a whole range of information on how to get the most from your product or service.

You can tell them to most common problems and how to overcome them, the most common mistakes and how to avoid them.

So delivering information over the internet is a fantastic strength of this media.

But if you try to make all your sales online you'll be leaving a fortune on the table.

A well crafted online sales letter will never get the same response as talking to a prospect through mail, over the phone, through live chat or in person.

Once you understand this you can analyze the sales process your prospects go through before they buy your product and use the internet to deliver information but also follow up by mail, phone or in person at key times when your prospects are most likely to buy.

The great news here is that after being pre-educated with your online sales process closing the sale offline with your prospects should be very easy.

The second tip for building an ecommerce site that makes real sales is to design your site around what your prospects need at each stage of the sales process.

Forget about looking pretty.

While functional, professional looking web design is important the most effective ecommerce websites focus very heavily engaging qualified prospects with information that is useful to them in a media that appeals to them.

Some prospects love streaming video...some love print...some love audio.

In some cases you might want to give all three options at some point in your online pre-education process.

You need to get to know your prospects and clients so you have a better understanding of the kind of information and the kind of media they prefer.

Always keep in mind that while we justify our purchases based on rational reasons we actually make our purchasing decisions based on emotional reasons.

So presenting your information in a way that has more emotional impact...through engaging real life stories, through video and audio...is far more likely to bring your prospects to the point where they're read to buy.

The third and final tip for building an ecommerce site that makes real sales is to have a definite call to action on every one of your website pages.

If a page on your website is there to entice new prospects into your sales process then give them a valuable incentive for sharing their name and email address to get more information from you.

Tell them to enter that name and email address and tell them about the valuable gift they'll get in return and the valuable information you'll be sending them by email in the future.

If you have a page that's further on in your sales process designed to get your prospect to finally take action tell your prospect to call you on the phone for a free quote or for a free personal consultation.

If you don't have a strong call to action on your web page then your prospects are most likely to do absolutely nothing.

You need to build trust in your prospects then get them to take the next step.

That's how you build an ecommerce site that turns prospects into eager paying clients.

Let me tell you exactly how to write an ebook that sells. This is a method I've used over and over that will work for you.

Best of all while it is important that you can write clearly and coherently you don't have to be a great writer to do this. And you can get started making money today before you even write a word.

If that sounds a bit far fetched to you I don't blame you for being skeptical.

After over a decade struggling to make a living as a writer I wouldn't have believed it either.

But there really is a way to write a steady stream of ebooks that sell and to get paid good money before you even start.

Let me share some fundamentals with you.

First you have to understand that you only get paid for the value you create when you write.

If you can write an ebook or a report that generates tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars in sales or business it's reasonable to expect to be paid a good percentage of the profits you generate.

That's why it's so much easier to make money writing an ebook or a report in the business how to niche than it is to make money writing a fiction book.

But there's an even more important fundamental you need to grasp if you want to write an ebook that sells immediately.

Before you turn on your computer and start writing you must have a hungry market to sell your ebook to.

The only way to guarantee your ebook will sell is to know at least one person will buy it...before you write a word.

And here's my real secret to writing an ebook that sells.

I don't try to write ebooks for the general market. I don't even try to sell them myself.

You can make an exceptional income by writing ebooks and reports to help local businesses sell their products and services.

If you were working with a pool and spa installer you might write an ebook with the title "The 7 Most Costly Mistakes You Can Make Installing Your Home Spa (And How To Avoid Them)".

It doesn't have to be a long ebook either. Just one to ten pages that lead to the obvious conclusion for the prospect that he should be getting his spa installed by your client.

I've been paid many thousands of dollars to write simple 3-7 page reports.

And my clients pay me 50% of my fee in advance. That means I get paid a substantial amount of money for my ebook before I even write a word!

And the other half when I finish.

Best of all you can do this too.

All you need to do is go talk to business owners in your local area.

Tell them you have your own business as an internet marketing consultant and get into a casual conversation about how they're doing their online and offline marketing.

Then you can give them some ideas on how to integrate their marketing more effectively by using automated email follow up and ebooks or reports delivered online pre-educating their prospects on why they should buy from them.

And here's where this gets really exciting.

Most offline businesses have a huge infrastructure set up, they're spending serious money on advertising and marketing and they have massive highly targeted foot traffic moving through their business premises.

Yet most of them do NO serious list building at all.

Think about the numbers here.

Your average retail business will get 200 to 1,000 people walking into their store every day. These are all highly targeted prospects or paying clients.

That's 6,000 to 30,000 people every month. And even if half of those are repeat clients that's still 3,000 to 15,000 new highly targeted prospects a month.

Imagine doing some low key list building in the store...maybe by having a free prize draw.

Visitors to the store have to enter their name, email address, mailing address and phone number so they can be notified if they win the highly targeted prize on offer.

And imagine just 10% of those people walking into the store in a month enter the prize draw and join your list.

The Shocking Power Of Social Proof On Video

How are we affected by social proof and the herding instinct?

Are our actions really influenced heavily by the actions we see of others around us?

Consider the astounding results in this study by Albert Bandura of nursery school children afraid of dogs.

Young children terrified of dogs watched a little boy happily playing with a dog for twenty minutes a day.

Just 4 days later 67 percent of these kids would now climb into a playpen with a dog and stay there petting it and scratching it even when everyone else left the room!

And this transformation from terrified children to dog lovers using some simple social proof seemed to be long lasting too.

A month after the initial test the children were more willing than ever to play with dog.



Here's something even more powerful if you're using online video.

Further studies showed that it wasn't necessary to show live demonstrations of other children playing with dogs.

Watching videos worked just as well!

And the best results of all were achieved when a video showed a variety of children interacting with dogs.

Social proof seems to work a whole lot more effectively when prospects see various members of "the herd" taking the desired action.


Another study of pre-school age children by Robert O'Connor points towards a powerful way you can use online video to influence the behavior of your prospects.

O'Connor wanted to see if he could help socially withdrawn pre-schoolers begin interacting with other children their age more actively in a more natural, relaxed, happy way.


O'Connor created a video with 11 different scenes where a solitary child was watching a social activity then joined in much to the the enjoyment of everyone involved.

So the video went from the child:

1. Alone considering joining "the herd".
2. Joining the herd.
3. Having a great time and being accepted by the herd.

What happened to the pre-schoolers who watched this 23 minute move?

The socially withdrawn children immediately began to interact with other children their age in a normal way.

And six weeks later the children who watched the video were now leading their schools in the amount of social activity they engaged in.

In another study in 1972 by Robert Liebert and Robert Baron it was discovered that children shown excerpts from a television program where people intentionally harmed one another were far more likely to harm other children.

Put simply we're herding animals and we're deeply influenced by the behavior of others we see around us (or even on video).

You can use this power of social proof to your advantage by using video testimonials and videos and stories that dramatize the process of joining the herd who are buying your product.

"Like you I thought I was the only person with this problem."

"Then I found this product and I saw that a whole pile of people just like you and me were using it and their problem was disappearing. Finally a solution that can work for me you and hundreds of people just like us."

"I bought the product and now my problem is solved. I'm now part of the happy group of people like Sara, Michael, Jane, Mark, Bruce, Pamela, Andrew, George. People just like you and me who've dumped their problem and enjoy these benefits. Come join us and enjoy the benefits too."

What Is Social Proof And The Herding Instinct?

What is social proof and why is it so important if you want to sell products online or offline?

Put simply social proof is the idea that everyone else is buying this product so I should by it too.

Only 5% of the population are leaders and the other 95% are followers.

We're herding animals. It's a survival instinct.

Being part of a "herd" or group of humans helped to protect us from wild animals and other tribes.

So we feel the safest when we feel like we belong to a herd.

In fact as humans that sense of "belonging" is one of our primary psychological needs.

Buying products or services creates anxiety and fear in us and when we're fearful we subconsciously seek protection and safety.

So our herding instinct kicks in.

And if we see that a whole pile of other people have also bought and are buying this product or service that helps us feel a whole lot safer in our purchase because we know we'll "belong" to a large group of buyers.

That's why it's so important to use testimonials in your sales copy.

It's also why referral marketing is so powerful.

You literally have someone from your buying herd inviting another person to come to a place where they can feel a sense of belonging.

Is Communication Breakdown Killing Your Sales?

I was listening to my wife having a Skype conversation with her mother today.

Skype is such a great way to communicate with people on the other side of the world.



Or it would be if you weren't trying to connect two computers on different speed internet connections.

And trying to connect a tech savvy daughter with a tech dunce mother.

The conversation quickly deteriorated into something like "I can hear you. Can you hear me?"

After the first 3 or 4 times this wears thin.

Even my wife is not going to sit on Skype for half an hour repeating "I can hear you. Can you hear me? Do you have your speakers on?" etc etc to her mother.



It's very difficult to have a conversation with someone when you don't think they can hear a word you're saying.

Yet we try to do that online all the time.

We have sales letters, online audio and online video where we're talking away to our prospects but do we really know if they're listening at all?

That's why it's so important to get your prospects online to engage with you and create a 2 way conversation.

You can do this with forums (okay), actual back and forth emails with prospects (better), online chat (better still), or with real phone calls and Skype calls (fantastic).

If the product or service you're selling has a high enough price point and profit you may even go see your prospect in person (best of all).

You can a 2 way conversation started with your prospects and clients simply by sending an email to your list asking them to send you their most pressing question.

Tell them you normally charge for your advice (hopefully you do) but you'll answer their question completely free.

You'll be amazed at some of the questions you get and some of the problems your prospects are having that you've overlooked (there's gold in your prospects' problems).

What you want is to go from you talking constantly to your prospects to engaging your prospects in a 2 way conversation where they can tell you how they feel about your product, what they're real problems and objections are, what they really want and need and where their hot buttons really are.

Many online marketers forget that all marketing is really about persuading real living, breathing, loving human beings.

And the better you get to know those quirky human beings through real interaction the more likely you are to persuade them.

This is a powerful marketing method called "forced continuity".

It's a method I explain and recommend in the product Offers Unleashed but I believe Mike has made a marketing error in the way he's promoting this offer.

Why?

The gift offer is fantastic.

A great new report $297 value plus process maps plus a printed copy of the Butterfly Marketing Manuscript all for the modest cost of shipping and handling.

That is exceptional value but here's the mistake.

The real product is the magazine and it's not made perfectly clear in the sales page that you'll be subscribed to the magazine if you take up the gift offer.

Worse still there is no real attempt to sell you on the exceptional value of this magazine.

If you want your paid subscribers to stay paid subscribers they really need to be sold in advance on the idea.

You want them sweating blood over getting every issue of your magazine.

You want them checking their mailbox three times a day waiting eagerly for it to arrive.

With Mike's current promotion you barely know what's in it and it plays second fiddle to the bonuses.


Finally one issue is unresolved in the sales copy for this offer...the reason why.

If Mike sold you on the fantastic information in his MarketingDotCom magazine and said the reason he's giving you these great gift offers is to entice you to try the magazine at his risk that's believable.

You can see what is in it for him.

But the way the offer is framed now it almost seems like he's pulling a fast one on you.

He doesn't tell you in the video or the initial sales letter that there's on ongoing subscribition.

It is clearly outlined in the order form though and to Mike's credit he tells you exactly how to cancel your subscription too.

But why not feature this?

Sell the magazine. Tell prospects they get a free issue.

Tell them they can cancel any time in the next 30 days without paying a cent if they don't think the magazine is exceptional value.

Tell them all it takes is a simple phone call. In fact they can cancel any time even after they're paid subscribers. Again just a simple phone call.

Tell them you know they're not going to want to cancel after they read the first issue and that's why you're willing to give them all these fantastic products free.

You know they'll want to become a paid subscriber.



Now I know Mike has a strategy for upselling the people who order this special 7 Figure Code gift and I know that strategy could conceivably make him more profits than his magazine subscription.

But I also think if you're going to put your clients in a forced continuity program you need to sell that program to them so they'll stay on it and so they don't feel like you were trying to hoodwink them.

I should also say in summary that I think Mike's products are outstanding and he is a marketer of honesty and integrity.

Victor Schwab: 5 Fundamentals Of A Good Advertisement

The advertising and copywriting genius Victor O. Schwab outlined the 5 fundamentals for writing a good advertisement:

1. Get Attention
2. Show People An Advantage
3. Prove It
4. Persuade People To Grasp This Advantage
5. Ask For Action

This simple outline from Schwab's masterpiece "How To Write A Good Advertisement" really is spot on.

The only addition I would make is to point out the biggest secret to really getting attention, showing an advantage your prospect would be interested in and persuading them to grasp that advantage is to gain an intimate knowledge of your prospect before you write a word of your ad.

Schwab also elaborated on each of these principles.

1. Get Attention:

Schwab said the most reliable way to get attention is by using a powerful headline.

Good headlines use specific place names and numbers, they're highly targeted to a specific prospect and they draw a reader into the body copy.

Schwab also believed that a headline should be as long as it needs to be to grab the attention of your prospect.

Many of Schwab's most successful headlines were quite long.

He also warned against getting "arty" in your ads.

Advertisements (and online sales letters) that look too much like highly produced ads can often decrease your sales response.

You want your ads to closely resemble what your prospects would normally read.

Schwab also points out that large, simple photographs of people, children and animals get more attention.

He also reveals that having a picture of your product IN USE doing something, accomplishing something that appeals to the reader is more likely to get attention.


2. Show People An Advantage

Victor Schwab said there is one question prospects have above all others when they're reading an ad for your product or service:
"What Will It Do For Me?"

You need to put yourself in your prospect's shoes when you're writing an ad and work out what THEY want...what major hidden motivators will drive them to buy your product.

Schwab also listed some of the basic human desires you should be aware of including:
# Money and a better job
# Security in old age
# Popularity

# Praise from others
# More comfort
# Social advancement

# Improved appearance
# Personal prestige
# Better health
# Increased enjoyment

You don't try to sell the powerful stain removing power of a new kitchen cleaner.

You sell the "admiring looks on the faces of your friends when they see your kitchen sparkling like it was brand new and never used".

Schwab also stresses the vital importance of giving people a real reason to keep reading your ad in the first paragraph.

My own tests have shown that rewriting that key opening line can dramatically increase your sales.


3. Prove It

Schwab points out that most people will not believe what you tell them in an ad unless you prove it with facts, figures, testimonials, scientific proof and any other method you can devise.

Even more important Schwab reveals a huge secret: while most prospects will buy for deeper emotional reasons they want to justify their purchase with hard facts.

That's where proof becomes especially valuable.

Proof also helps build belief in your prospect fueling those emotional desires to buy.

While we might believe that we buy on logic the truth is the heart dictates to the head when it comes to most of our buying decisions.



4. Persuade People To Grasp This Advantage

One of the key methods Schwab recommends is to sum up the emotional and logical reasons your prospect should buy then help them picture themselves already enjoying the benefits of your product or service.

In modern copywriting terms we call this "future pacing".

Once your prospect is already imagining himself and the life he'll have when he already has your product he'll be especially eager to buy it.

And that leads to:



5. Ask For Action

In his book Advertising For Immediate Sales John Caples once wrote:
"There are a lot of good advertisements that are weak in the final urge to act. They are like salesmen who are charming talkers but weak closing men. If they had the right stuff they would pick the reader up by the collar of his coat and the seat of his trousers and stiff-arm him into a showroom."

You need to tell you prospect exactly what to do to buy your product.

And you need to make it simple, easy and specific.

Most important of all the call to action in your sales copy needs to get your prospect to act NOW.

Any delay and the chances are that you'll lose the sale altogether.

How Do You Search Engine Optimize Your Pages?

I was asked recently how do you optimize your pages so you get top rankings in search engines like Google and Yahoo?

I've been fortunate enough to work with a couple of the world's leading SEO experts and while this list is hardly comprehensive it will give you a great start when you're creating pages to capture those top rankings:

1. Make a list of long tail keyword phrases that show the people searching for them are likely to buy your product.

There are many keyword tools out there.

2. Create one single page optimized for each keyword phrase with 250-600 words of content about that keyword phrase.

Also if you have photos video, audio or anything else on the page it helps if the names of those files include your keyword phrase and it helps even more if the content of those files are about your keyword phrase.


3. Probably the most important thing. Be sure the title that appears in the browser window is exactly the same as your keyword phrase for the page.

So if your keyword phrase was "sell your home book" then the title tag in the html on your page would be:
Sell Your Home Book
inside the appropriate html title tags.


4. It does help to have a well written enticing Meta description tag in the html of your page too.

This is often what your prospect will see in the listings of search engine results.

So in the example above your meta description in the html of your page might look like this...
"Groundbreaking book reveals how you can sell your home in 3 weeks or less and get 10% to 30% above market price. Download the first chapter on this page FREE."
inside the appropriate html meta content description tags.


5. Get some backlinks to each page from pages that have related content and are already indexed in Google and other search engines.

It helps if the hyperlink includes your keyword phrase but it's no longer necessary.

These days it is very easy to get backlinks by posting on related blogs and forums, putting videos on youtube, and content on social media sites like Facebook and Myspace.


6. Link related pages of content you create to each other (if that fits in with your website marketing strategy).

Andrew Cavanagh: A Marketing Great

In the report Offline Gold: How The US Government Will Book Your Clients For You marketing consultant David Preston labeled me (Andrew Cavanagh) as "one of the marketing greats".

David also said: "There are many, many methods you can use to bring new clients to you. Andrew Cavanagh and Willie Crawford are two of the best there are in that arena."

"Everything you need to generate six figures is in the Offline Gold package."

"It's a straightforward workable approach that works well IF you start it."


Clearly David Preston is a genius but my wife isn't too keen on his analysis and here's why:

As soon as I read about how I was now a "marketing great" I told my wife that she should bow down to me and grovel at my feet (strangely she refused).

I also pointed out that with my newfound marketing greatness I would no longer have to work.

I could just lie around the house surfing the internet and play table tennis at the local club whenever I felt like it.

Her comment was "So how is that different to what you do now?"

I get no respect in my own home I tell ya. No respect at all.



But I got to thinking about that title "marketing great" and I think I should tell you a few secrets I discovered many, many years ago hanging out with guys who were considered "gurus" or had achieved a certain level of fame and prominence.

1. At their core everyone is just an ordinary person with their own strengths and weaknesses.

Many of the people you're mentally putting on a pedestal could actually have LESS skill and talent than you.

They're just further along and have taken more action that's led to a successful result than you have.

Realizing this can boost your confidence enormously if you're stuck in the "guru trap" of following someone's advice without ever applying your own intelligence, ingenuity and judgment.


2. We have a tendency to make assumptions about the income and net worth of people based on their prominence. That's a big mistake.

The "copywriting great" Gary Halbert spent much of his life periodically broke mainly because he spent his money so fast.

Legend has it that at one time Gary managed to spend $20 million in just 2 years to get himself back to broke again.

Your net worth and income rely on a whole pile of factors and many can have nothing to do with business.

The problem is with the thinking "if only I was at his level then I'd be rich and happy".

Most people who've achieved "extraordinary success" will tell you (if they're being dead honest) that wealth and success sneak up on you gradually and when you get there your personal experience is not hugely different.

You wake up, you eat (hopefully), you work, you play (hopefully), you sleep.

Forget about the fantasy that someone has a better life than you and start setting yourself some personal income and lifestyle goals.

Goals that will suit you.

Decide what kind of lifestyle you want how much money you need to earn to make it and how many hours you want to work to make it.

Leave yourself time for your family and your children. Time for the things you like to do that make your life fulfilling.

And remember above all remember that the only life that is truly fulfilling is a life of service to others.

In this free video Dan Kennedy explains why the principles of selling and direct response marketing never change.

As Dan says these principles have been the same since the first person sold a round wheel to a fellow caveman.

Selling is selling and like it or not selling products online IS selling...



I agree with Dan.

If I had a choice between some fancy film director and an old broken down vacuum cleaner salesman I'd take the vacuum cleaner salesman too.

You must know how to sell if you want to sell successfully online.

And as the market gets more competitive the marketers who are better at selling will be the same marketers who are leading the marketplace and making real profits while everyone else is struggling or going broke.

If you've never sold a product one on one to a prospect I highly recommend you go do it.

So what are the foundational principles of direct response marketing?

1. Find a hungry market that's easy and economical to get to.

2. Gain intimate knowledge of that market so you can...

Why What You Have Is NOT A Business

In this free video Dan Kennedy points out that the media you market through is NOT a business.

He talks about how many people thought television infomercials were a business in the early days and now nearly all of those companies have disappeared.

And he warns that the internet is not a business, direct mail is not a business, television advertising is not a business...



I would also add that a retail store is not a business either...it's simply a lead generation method.

You pay rent and set up a retail location so you can sell products to the people who pass by your store.

If you're smart you capture the contact details of your prospects and customers and follow up with them using other media.



So if all these things aren't businesses what does a business consist of?

The most important asset in any business is trust you've built in a group of clients and prospects.

And there's a hint there.

A business really consists of a group of prospects and clients who trust you enough that you can market your products and/or services to them.

And to be a long term profitable business you must have easy access to that group through multiple channels.

So if you want to build a thriving business you should focus heavily on capturing the full contact details of all your prospects and clients so you can get in touch with them at will in a variety of ways...email, phone, mail, fax, text, in person at their home and their business, at special events etc etc.

And you should also focus on building that key trust so you can maintain a long term relationship that's profitable for both of you.

In this video Dan explains why it is far easier to run a business where your clients spend $1,000 to $50,000+ with you over a year than it is to run a business where your average client might only spend $20-$100 over a year...



It does make good business sense to have high value clients.

You require far less infrastructure, your overheads are usually much, much lower and your nett profits are usually far higher.
