When you're hiring an online copywriter you really want to know if that copywriter can deliver.

The first thing you should look for is a long portfolio of great online copywriting samples.

Go through those samples and see if there are any pieces of copy in your niche or in a similar niche.

That information can be worth a fortune to you if you put it to use.

And don't be fooled by a copywriter's name or reputation.

The best online copywriter in the world for you is the copywriter who devotes his skill, time and energy into creating a sales letter and marketing process that will make you many times what you pay him.

Is Operation Moneysuck A Loser's Dead End?

Some great marketing minds have recommended a mindset to help you hone in on what you should do right now in your business.

Named "Operation Moneysuck" the theory is that you focus on doing now what will bring you the most money in the shortest possible time.

This sounds logical and there's no doubting it WILL make you money.

There's only one problem with this philosophy.

It will almost certainly lead you to an empty soulless existence.

Let me explain...


At some point the term "the bottom line in business" was coined.

And at some point "the bottom line" came to mean the monetary profits of a business were THE most important measure of the success of that business.

Can you see a problem with this little piece of misleading garbage?


First of all business was designed to serve people.

People were never meant to serve business and as living breathing, loving people we were never meant to serve the "God of Profits."

The great and wonderful irony is that the businesses that have solely focused on this faulty "bottom line" thinking are now finding it harder and harder to survive.

Client loyalty is now at a premium as we face a more and more skeptical market and new customer acquisition becomes more and more difficult and expensive.

Companies like Whole Foods and a whole pile of small entrepreneurs online (God bless them all) are finding that giving real clients real service can make you a profit leader by default...even when that was never your primary goal.



So what is the lesson you can learn from this amazing, wonderful trend in business?

Start with good intentions first.

Here's an exercise you can do now that makes "Operation Moneysuck" look like the the losers dead end it really is.

Ask yourself one simple question...

"What is the ultimate outcome I'd like my clients to get from their interaction with me, my products and my business?"

"If I could give them anything what would it be?"

Then ask another question...

"What is the first step my client or potential client needs to take to move towards that ultimate outcome?"

"What is the next step?"

And so on.

Once you've gone through this process your view of your business, your calling and your role as a real force for change in your little corner of the world will never be the same again.

Autoresponder Copywriting

Copywriting for an autoresponder series is a complex skill.

First you have to get your prospect to open your email with a compelling subject line.

Then you have to get your prospect to click through from the email to a site or take some other course of action which means your prospect will have to read at least part of your email.

Which is difficult enough when we're bombarded every day with spam emails, promotional emails and emails from friends and family.

But you also have to get your emails past the spam filters and ISPs which are dumping emails at an astonishing rate.

So one of the greatest keys to writing any email for an autoresponder is knowing which words and phrases will get your email labeled as spam.

And avoiding those words.

Let me give you some examples of words that trigger spam filters...

"free" "$" "click" "click here" "cash"

Opening a sales email

How do you open a sales email so you get the maximum number of your subscribers to click through to your sales page or your order page.

There are a few simple principles.

1st: You need a compelling, very specific subject in your email.

Something that forces your prospect to open the email and look inside.

Keep in mind that...just like you...your prospects go through their inbox with their fingers poised over the DELETE key.

Let me give you an example of an email subject I wrote for a client that's hard to ignore...

Andrew, you're number 1 on Google...

Technically speaking the subject line was
[firstname], you're number 1 on Google.

The email was sent to prospects interested in Search Engine Optimization so this subject was a heart stopper for them.


2nd: In the opening paragraph of your email give your prospect a compelling reason to click through to your sales or order page and put a link straight under that paragraph.

Don't wait to send them to a link.

Keep in mind that your prospects...just like you...are trying to get the gist of an email as fast as possible to see if they should delete it or take further action.

That link after the first short (often one sentence) paragraph is often enough to get them to click through.


Again your first sentence has to be VERY specific, intriguing and give your prospect a very real reason to take action.

If you get the opening in your sales emails right you'll find your click through rate and your sales will soar.

Famous Letters

Here's a famous sales letter from the Wall Street Journal that most copywriters have never heard about.

This sales letter was so successful at generating subscribers that it was the Wall Street Journal's most successful sales letter right up to the famous "two school graduates" letter.

Pinned to the top of this letter was a 100,000 mark German note. Its purpose, like that of the dollar, was to get the reader's immediate attention and arouse his interest in the message of letter...



Will You Accept The Enclosed German Reichsbank Note For 100,000 Marks, With OurCompliments?

Dear Sir:

If the enclosed German Reichsbank Note for 100,000 Marks pays for one minute of your time, consider yourself engaged.

Yes, it's a real Reichsbank Note, put out by the German Government. Before the War, 100,000 marks were worth $23,820.00 in our money.

But when this particular issue of notes was retired, it took 10,000,000 notes like this to get a mark worth 24 cents in gold!

That is what uncontrolled inflation did to German money. As fast as new issues were brought out, the old ones dropped in value, until a man's only chance to get ahead lay in putting his money in common stocks, or into goods or real estate - or something that would go up in price just as fast as the value of his money went down.

Studying famous, highly profitable sales letters like this one can help ground you in the fundamentals of exceptional copywriting.

Notice how this copy used the Reichsmark as an attention "grabber" then ties its whole inflation/investment message into that worthless piece of currency.

Then ask yourself...how can I grab my prospect's attention and how can I tie the message in my sales copy to one intriguing hook?

This is a classic Eugene Schwartz ad with picture and bio of the author in it's own box and a whole pile of "future pacing".

Put simply "future pacing" is where you give your prospect a fantastic image of what their life will be like after they buy your product.

Schwartz lets you know what to expect "minutes after starting the memory course" like being able to burn 60-70 pages of a magazine into your memory after studying it once...

Or committing a half hour speech to memory in minutes.

This is a powerful method Schwartz used in many of his most successful ads...painting an intriguing and exciting picture of the benefits of the product he was selling.

Decide exactly how much money you want to make, how many hours you want to work to make it and how many weeks off you want every year.

And start focusing on things that have real value like family, your local community, being of genuine service to others.


2. In your online business go through this exercise.

Ask yourself "If I could give my clients anything what is the ultimate outcome I'd like them to have from their interaction with me."

Then reverse engineer from that outcome back to what you need to do to help your clients by asking the question...
"What it the first thing my client would have to do to reach that outcome? How can I help my client take that first step? What is the next step?" and so on.

How Do You Research Your Sales Letters?

How Do You Research Your Sales Letters...?

Before I ever consider writing a sales letter I want to know there's a hungry market there who will buy the product.

From there my first research is getting to know my prospect.

Who are they?

How old?

What kind of problems do they have?

What are their deepest fears and desires?

What have they bought recently?

Why did they buy it?

What did they like about the sales process?

What did they dislike about the sales process?


You can get all this information by calling half a dozen prospects on the telephone or by talking to them in person.

I also research the product (usually information products).

I'll read every written word in the product and listen to every minute of every audio.

(I write bullets as I go).

Often I'll start talking to prospects and trying to sell them on buying this product as I'm learning about it.

What I'm looking for is the way to express benefits in the products that gets people's attention.

What makes them stop and say "Really...how does that work?" or

"Really...how much does it cost?" or

"Wow...that's what I need!" or something along those lines.

Once I can talk to a real live prospect and have them begging to buy the product from me I know I've done enough basic research to write the sales letter.

Low key copywriting sells...

In the past, especially in direct mail, the prevailing wisdom is that high energy copy with bold claims will outpull low key copy.

But the trend offline is away from bold claims and towards high content lead ins to a sales message (the magalog is a classic example of this).

I'm finding online low key copy with a high degree of proof sells very well.

Especially if it has a warm tone capitalizing on an existing relationship with the prospect.

If you're using a "high-energy" message these days online you better have a ton of proof and make your language VERY specific.

Claims like

"Make MILLIONS With This Amazing NEW Cash Creating Online System!!" just won't cut it in today's online market.

But when you get more specific and include proof that changes everything...

"How I Made $234,785 In 86 Days Creating Simple 2 Minute Videos And Posting Them On YouTube And How I Taught 10 Online Entrepreneurs My Step-By-Step System..."

"See The Screenshots Of My Paypal and Clickbank accounts below and read the testimonials from ALL 10 of my students RAVING about how the same system I'm offering you can start increasing your online traffic and your income as soon as 42 days from today..."


Also the shift has happened online...the market is now mainly inhabitants of the X generation.

Baby boomers are a breeze to sell to in comparison to the "X generation" who are the most cynical generation in history.

Proof and an existing relationship rule.
