Radio Copywriting

Copywriting for radio takes a different approach to copywriting for other media but the principles are the same.

Here's one of my pet peeves.

People will get free publicity on radio and they're so thrilled that they got "exposure" that they never have any call to action, they never measure the sales they make from their radio appearances - nothing.

You're throwing away your time and your effort (both of which you can put a dollar value on) if you don't use every appearance on radio as an opportunity to make sales or bring in qualified leads.

This is where the principles of copywriting meet radio and free publicity.

In copywriting you're trained to have a specific "call to action" in your copy.

It's the same on radio.

Give people a phone number to call and a reason to call you.

Either offer a free report, book, audio or consultation or better still offer to sell one of these at a special price.

If you make this offer "a special exclusive offer just for listeners of '4XKFM'"then the radio station will also love you for making them seem like the good guys bringing their listeners a special, exclusive deal.


Here's a HUGE tip.

Get people to call you on the phone from radio.

Trying to drive listeners to a web site from radio can suppress your response by 1,000% or more.

But it's worse than that.

From a radio spot - even free publicity - a high percentage of your prospects will call ready to buy your book, your audio or your program.

When they go to a website you're starting a square one.

You may only convert 10% of those visitors who come from your radio show.

That means you'll make 1/100th the sales as you would if you had people call you on the telephone.


So the golden rules of appearing on radio...

1. Have a definite call to action. Make your listeners an offer they can't refuse.

2. Get them to call you on the telephone.

Simple really but you'd be amazed at how many people mess up these two basic rules.

Copywriting To Capture Emails

No doubt you've heard that the money is in the list.

So how do you create an email list?

How do you get visitors to your website to happily give you their email address?

The biggest key to getting an email address is the OFFER.

If you offer a several part email course to subscribe to and you make that course sound really sexy your prospects will be dying to get and READ your emails.

A mini course is better than a free ebook for the same reason.

You want your prospects excited about reading your emails not - "Oh great I got the free ebook now here comes the spam!"

Then after the course you tell them they're already subscribed to your newsletter and can unsubscribe if they want.

Niche Copywriting

Why is it so important to niche yourself when you're a copywriter or marketing consultant (or in any consulting field).

You can get so consumed in learning how to write better copy that you forget the biggest key to making money - which really is helping others make money and having them understand the value of the service you provide.

The simplest way to do that is to niche really tight and be of tremendous value to your niche.

Average copy targeted well to a hungry audience will beat the living hell out of brilliant copy targeted poorly to an audience that is not highly motivated to buy what you're selling.


So you can charge more when you're tightly niched.

Some of the reasons you can charge so much more to a highly targeted niche market are...

1. You can create highly targeted solutions for that unique niche. These solutions will not only have higher perceived value, they will actually be of greater value to your clients.


2. In a VERY short period of time you can demonstrate your success with clients in your niche.

One or two happy clients and you have all the credibility you need to sell your unique, highly targeted solutions.

Also People in a tight niche usually know each other and talk.

You can easily end up being the topic of conversation - hopefully in a good way.


3. You can create a whole range of tightly niched products and services that require far less effort for you but have tremendous value to your niche.

This can help you get out of the dollars for hours working trap many copywriters get into.



4. If a niche is very tight it's very easy to be perceived as the only expert in your field in that niche.

That means you can charge more money and as I already explained you can deliver more real value.



So it's not a question of charging $50,000 instead of $500.

It's about providing $100,000 or $500,000 value and charging $50,000 instead of providing $1,000 value and charging $500.

Here's my rewrite for Michel's excellent ContextCASH product...

Now I'm going to go through why I made certain changes point by point because many of my observations challenge current online marketing norms.

But before I do that I should point out that Michel wrote the original copy for this product in less than 4 hours and I don't have the insights or reasons that Michel is making some of his points.

There are often very good reasons for explaining some key points in copy - completely removed from increasing sales response.

Also it is just SO hard to be objective about your own copy.

My girlfriend - who was a real live ROCKET SCIENTIST for Boeing - is always telling me I write FAR better copy for my clients than I do for my own products...

And it's true.

If it's true for me you can bet it's true for Michel.


One last warning...

I will be deleting these comments within a few days (possibly a few hours) because they reveal a whole PILE of money making copy secrets that I can SELL.

Just tip #2 alone can help you create THOUSANDS of dollars more value from your sales page with the change of just a few words...

Read this now or be forced to pony up $100 or MORE to read it later...



For what it's worth here are my insights moving through the copy from start to finish...

1. The offer...

Most of the work I do is actually improving the offer and often the product offered especially with information products my specialty.

Online your offer is everything.

Fortunately Michel's product concept is EXCELLENT and worth a BOATLOAD of cash to his prospects.

A real no-brainer.

So the only key was to make sure the headline communicated the offer - easy work...



2. The browser title.

Here's a secret I really argued with myself over sharing because to my clients it's worth more in free search engine traffic over a year than what they'll pay me for the copy.

The browser title is "profit from Google adwords alternative".

If it was my site I would have made it "profit from Google adwords".

Why?

If you find a highly targeted search term your prospects are looking for that has a small amount of traffic and not too much competition...

And you put that search term as the title in a sales page with a lot of good back links...

That can bring you 10-60 hits a day from the search engines by getting that term ranked number 1-5 on Google and Yahoo.

3,500 to 21,000 highly targeted hits a year just from choosing the right title.

An extra $350 to $21,000 value every year to my clients with one little tweak.



How do you choose the right title?

You know I'm not going to tell you that.

There's a limit to what I'm giving you free but I do this automatically for my lucky clients and JV partners...


But at least you now understand the value of finding a good keyword to use in the title and if you've studied search engine optimization as every good online copywriter should then I'm sure you'll work it out.



3. The preheadline...

A preheadline with some kind of free offer usually increases read through online.

Given a bit more thought you could improve this prehead.

The obvious improvement would be to give a dollar value to the free bonuses Michel is offering and put that into the prehead.



4. The headline...

Can be scanned and read VERY easily.

Online headlines seem to be getting longer and longer.

My personal opinion is in line with Ted Nicholas.

Once you get past around 17 words your major headline is hard to read.

You can have a longer headline - just break it up.



5. The lead in...

I think Michel's original wedding idea is fascinating but in my opinion he's making a fundamental error in the writing.

Why should I care about his wedding or his wonderful fiancee?

He needs to give me a reason to care - THEN I'll read his story.



6. Dear Friend...

NEVER in my copy!!!!!

NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER!!!

Why?

My apologies to Gary Halbert but has anyone ever split test "Dear Friend" online.

It makes sense in a printed letter because it makes the letter look like any other letter you'd get from friend or family in the mail.

But online???


Advertising is salesmanship in print.

I've sold a STACK of products and services one on one in the real world.

I've met some of the greatest salespeople alive.

Not one of them ever introduced themselves by saying "Dear Friend".

What they would do is ask questions about their prospect and get to know them.

Then eventually their prospect would ask about them.

Now we don't have the luxury of asking our prospects questions.

So here's the alternative...




7. Hi I'm Michel Fortin,

Now my estimate is that you now have two sentences to tell me exactly who you are and WHY I should invest my precious time reading anything you have to tell me.

Which is exactly what I do in the next two sentences.

"For years I've been the "secret weapon" behind the greatest online marketers alive like Frank Kern, Shawn Casey, Armand Morin, Yanik Silver, Kirt Christensen, Simon Grabowski and many, many others.

"One sales page I wrote for internet marketing genius John Reese brought in over 1 MILLION dollars in sales in under 48 hours."

This is designed to get the attention of people who want to make money online - obviously.

I think the copy actually took a million dollars in less than 24 hours but that's neither here nor there.


People are very sceptical online and they want to know you have some credibility AND...

You can give them a solution to their unique problem...

"Being an internet insider I've seen and tried just about every "new", "secret", "revolutionary" piece of internet marketing software you can imagine (and quite a few you could never imagine.)

"But I'm thrilled almost beyond words about a stunning breakthrough technology I've helped develop that you can have up and running on your website just minutes from now...




8. Then I give you a reason to care about the "wedding".

I introduce the other developer of the software that's going to fill your pockets with cash.

And introduce the wedding twist.

"An idea that perfectly "marries" two income-boosting Internet marketing concepts..."

"This Is A Marriage
Made In Cash Flow Heaven..."etc.




9. I personally don't like the factoids the way they're formatted.

If the facts are important enough for my reader to read then they should be part of good, flowing copy.

Just my opinion though.




10. I used the whole "people throwing credit cards" and "crushed in the rush" later in the copy as you'll see.




11. Or to borrow a somewhat hackneyed expression, it's "contextual advertising on steroids."

If it's a hackneyed expression don't use it!

Actually I thought is was a pretty good line but changed it to...

"It's like "Google AdSense" and "Clickbank"
on steroids!"...

Since our ideal prospect will almost certainly be familiar with these two services or at least will have some idea what they are.

(Also I've just explained what they are in the preceding copy).


I also tried to simplify the description of what ContextCASH does.





12. "Even more important if you're worried about your Google rankings and search engine optimization..."

Think about this for a minute.

If you have content on your site it's because you're trying to attract the search engines (especially Google.)

You don't want any newfangled software to SCREW up your search engine rankings or worse still get you banned altogether.

So we answer this objection with a bold lead in so people will see it when they skim...

AND we finish the section with the amazing piece of information that ...

"if you have outbound affiliate links now and you use the ContextCASH system as an alternative method to create those links which could increase your search engine rankings!

The vast majority of the prospects for this product are search engine sensitive and for some this USP (not identified in Michel's original copy clearly) could be enough reason to buy the product.




13. The ContextCASH screen shots...

Having 10 screen shots and detailed instructions of all the features makes this product seem WAY too complex.

In my opinion these features should be rewritten as benefits on a completely different FAQ page.

I've cut down the description to the three simple steps you need to take to actually use this software to make money.

(I also explain that the software is used online which leads in to the reason you have to subscribe).


The objective here is to make this whole process look so brain-dead easy (which it really is) that people will think a chimpanzee on a laptop could make this software work.





14. Click here to claim your subscription to contextCASH now...

By this stage they know enough to buy and many will be motivated to buy.

Also these frequent links to the order page make it far easier for someone revisiting the sales page to give you their CASH.





15. Comparing apples to oranges with the price...

Three comparisons of what you'd expect to pay for this product...always a great way to increase perceived value and a great way to introduce the actual price...


"If you tried to create your own ContextCASH first you'd have to pay for developing the software.

"Then you'd have to hire your own employee like Sarah to continually survey the marketplace or spend hours doing this laborious chore yourself.

"You'd be very lucky if you had much change left from $20,000 and remember you have to keep paying Sarah week in and week out.

"But we're not going to charge you $20,000.

We're not even going to charge you $1,000.

"If you subscribe to the ContextCASH service right now you can claim the never to be repeated mind boggling bargain of just $97...

"Then you pay $37 for each subsequent month for as long as you choose to remain active.

"You have NO long-term commitments

"You can cancel anytime." (Vital risk-reversal statement for subscriptions)

"Think about it...$37 a month is peanuts...

"Just one modest Clickbank sale a month, and the software pays for itself."




16. The reason why...

"Why are we willing to put our own money on the line to give you this amazing risk free offer?

"We know you'll be so thrilled with your cash profits from ContextCASH you'll be with us for a long, long time."

This is believable and the truth.




17. The bonuses to increase the value of the offer...

These bonuses would have an even higher perceived value if they were each given a dollar value.




18. The reason to ACT NOW...

In the P.S. I give the story about Michel and Sylvie being crushed with the rush of new customers and people throwing their credit cards on stage.

Then explain the number of subscribers is limited because the system can't be fully automated.

AND how you could miss out if you don't act NOW...

All true and a very believable reasons not to put off your decision if you're a prospect.

Reasons to act now MUST be believable.




19. Testimonials...

The BEST place for testimonials is right after a bullet that explains a benefit...

Then you put a testimonial where someone got the benefit you promise in the bullet.

With this copy we didn't have testimonials but we did have feedback.

This is another way of putting testimonials in your copy...at the end.

Just be sure to include an order now link after every couple of testimonials so your prospect doesn't have to search for it.


Anyway that's my two cents worth.

The online video revolution is very exciting indeed but if you're a copywriter you should be careful of gettting swept away in this tidal wave of video without keeping in mind the tried, tested and true alternatives...

It's a lesson in how to effectively activate more of your prospects senses when you write copy and brings up some interesting points about the limitations of video.

I should confess and tell you it was me who wrote this report for my client and friend Michael Senoff.

I should also say I think video online will become bigger than TV advertising in the next decade (unless the nature of the internet changes radically.)

TV advertising is no longer cost effective (except in some unusual cases where VERY savvy direct response marketers are working on extreme discournts or percentage of turnover deals).

Online video on the other hand is highly effective because it's market is highly targeted.

But the danger is falling into chasing "the next best thing" instead of staying focused on REAL copywriting fundamentals.

Advertising is salesmanship in print, or on audio, or on video.

You still have to use good selling principles to sell.

How Much Should You Pay To Get A Press Release Written?

It's completely impossible to get the right answer if you don't ask the right question.

The first question you need to ask is...

"How much money is my business likely to make if I get a fantastic, effective press release written? What is it really worth to me?"

The second question...

"If I get an amateurish press release the online media don't like will they ignore anything else I send them in the future?"



I can tell you this...

I've written press releases online that got from 20,000 to over 40,000 hits in under 24 hours.

What is that worth to your business?

I've written press releases offline that got me on radio stations, TV, the front page of the newspaper (repeatedly).

And as a result of one press release (and my skill) I now appear regularly on 40 commercial radio stations across Australia - 1-2 hour show and I've done this for nearly a year.

I get to do a FULL on pitch at the end of the show for any product I like and they even repeat the show complete with pitch in the middle of the night.

It's hard to explain what it's like waking up and finding a boatload of messages on your message bank with people wanting to order your product.



Now generally I don't do press releases except for myself and clients I'm doing joint ventures with or copy for.

But what is the kind of exposure I just mentioned worth and is i worth hiring the $10 guy to SCREW up your relations with the media.

Cost estimate for someone good.

Well first thing.

If they're really good they'll write 2 press releases at the same time so that when you get interviews you can pitch the next even sexier story.

$500 to $2,000 a press release.

You might get someone good to do 2 for you at say $800 to $1,000.


Here's another trap.

Don't be fooled by the "media placement" bull****.

It's a step above the average PR firm who give you no performance guarantees.

Let me explain.

I could get you on 40 commercial radio stations across Australia for an hour or so.

A media placement service might charge you the equivalent in advertising cost (around $100,000).

You would NEVER make that kind of cash out of the appearance though.

(At least not on front end).

Making money out of your stories in the media or online press releases...

Converting the free publicity from the press release into real sales is a WHOLE different area and very few people who can write a good press release can tell you how to do that.

Copywriting - How To Write A Press Release

Here's the basics of writing a press release that will get you on radio, on TV in the newspaper.

I appear regularly on over 40 radio stations across Australia.

I've got publicity on the front page of the newspaper many times.

And yes I've got on TV.

Here's some guidelines for those offline press releases...

1. Start with a killer headline.

2. Say it in two sentences or less.

3. Make them contact you. DON'T give them all the information. Use teasers so they have to call to get the story.
If they call you the're already 90% committed to doing a story on you.

4. The idea is everything. You have to make the idea behind your press release really sexy to get results.


If it won't fit double spaced on a single page IT'S TOO LONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you do a press release for TV think images that will work well on TV.

On radio think of "sound bytes" - catchy lines that come over well on audio.



Provide a simple catchy story and when they interview you they'll let you
promote your business. They know and expect it as part of the deal.

My biggest problem when I get interviewed is getting them to promote only one of my products. They want to do everything they're so excited about the story!!

Also think ahead. Have a second release ready so you can mention it when you get interviewed (this is a HUGE key).

That way you can go from one interview to the next using media contacts you've already developed.

In this post I explain the best way to reveal the price of your product or service in a sales letter.

Many copywriters make the mistake of revealing the price of the product or service too early in the copy.

Good copy is salesmanship in print and any good salesman knows that you have to establish value before you let your prospect know how much the price will be.

Put simply if you establish that your product is the solution to what your prospect perceives as his unique problem then you have something you can compare the price of your product to.


A great technique is to compare your product to two other higher priced solutions.


For example the cost of seeing a back specialist and the annual cost of painkillers for your back as opposed to buying a course on relieving back pain naturally.

So don't give the price before...

1. Establishing your product is the solution to their unique problem.

2. Establishing the value of your product - usually by comparing apples to oranges.

Here's a tip for copywriters reading this blog who might be starting out or struggling to make a good living writing copy.

The biggest secret you'll ever learn...

MARRY yourself to the clients who are a pleasure to deal with and make them rich.

Rich clients always have plenty of money for more great copy.

Do the sums yourself.

You can make a very good living out of just ONE client.

3-6 great clients is more than enough to make over $500,000 a year as a copywriter if you're making your clients real money.



You have to stay in constant contact - build solid meaningful relationships with your clients.

And when you email them or drop them a note give them ideas on how they can make more money - whether it requires your help with copy or not.

Loyal clients don't happen by accident.

You also have to educate your clients about the value of the service you've given them otherwise it's quite likely they won't really know.

Many copywriters think they need to schmooze with their clients - buy them drinks and dinner to keep them happy.

You know more valuable than wine and dinner to a real hard core direct response client is...

IDEAS.

Strategies, product ideas, email ideas - anything that can make them more money.

And those ideas almost inevitably lead to them hiring you over and over.




Just remember that to maintain half a dozen great clients there's obviously some attrition.

If you have ANY marketing blood in your veins you're always increasing your prospect base even when you don't need clients.

But focus on really taking care of the clients who bring in the major part of your profits.

You can get all the clients you need just from referrals from good clients.

And these referrals will often be similar, excellent clients too.

The value of a client increases exponentially when you factor in referrals.

A call to action (or multiple calls to action) is vital for powerful copy.

And it goes WAY beyond just making more sales...



Let's assume you have a great product or service.

Let's assume your prospects lives will be measurably ehanced if they buy your product or service.

You are doing your prospects a tremendous disservice if you don't get them to act NOW.

Right now.

Not when they feel like it - NOW.



If your daughter was riding a tricycle across the street and a truck was coming would you say - "You know darling it'd be better and safer if you got off the street - if you feel like it. If not, no rush."

Crap you would.

You'd yell "Get off the road NOW" and if necessary physically grab your daughter and pull her off the road.

There are negative consequences for your prospects if you don't get them to act NOW.

Don't be embarrassed for a second to use the language you need to use to get your prospect to TAKE ACTION immediately.

Can you use copywriting to sell a service instead of a product?

The simple answer is yes and here's a couple of tips to help you.

Creating a lead in report or audio download (or CD) is often an effective way to get people to call you.

If you really, desperately want people to call you then offering an initial free consultation can be very effective but you have to establish the VALUE of this free consultation with your copy.

Here's a proven piece of copy I wrote for Michael Senoff at hardtofindseminars.com that has been very successful as a lead generator.

This copy has been up for over a year bringing in a steady stream of leads and the copy sells a consulting service.

It's important to note that the principles of selling a product or a service are the same.

Note that the copy is designed to eliminate a large percentage of the people who wouldn't pay for the full service (designed to eliminate freebie seekers).

Just in case you missed what I'm suggesting instead of getting people to call you for a free quote get them to call you for a free consultation (normally $150 value).

And then sell the value of that consultation.

You have a lot of valuable, specialized knowledge on web services etc.

That's what you sell. The value of that information to your clients.

And you tell them they have to act now because you and your trained consultants only have a limited time available for these free consultations (true).

Copywriting for a service follows the same principles of copywriting for a product.

Find where the value lies for your prospect in using that service and give them an offer they'd be crazy to refuse.

It really is that simple.
