And as the market gets more competitive the marketers who are better at selling will be the same marketers who are leading the marketplace and making real profits while everyone else is struggling or going broke.

He talks about how many people thought television infomercials were a business in the early days and now nearly all of those companies have disappeared.

And he warns that the internet is not a business, direct mail is not a business, television advertising is not a business...



I would also add that a retail store is not a business either...it's simply a lead generation method.

You pay rent and set up a retail location so you can sell products to the people who pass by your store.

If you're smart you capture the contact details of your prospects and customers and follow up with them using other media.



So if all these things aren't businesses what does a business consist of?

The most important asset in any business is trust you've built in a group of clients and prospects.

And there's a hint there.

A business really consists of a group of prospects and clients who trust you enough that you can market your products and/or services to them.

And to be a long term profitable business you must have easy access to that group through multiple channels.

So if you want to build a thriving business you should focus heavily on capturing the full contact details of all your prospects and clients so you can get in touch with them at will in a variety of ways...email, phone, mail, fax, text, in person at their home and their business, at special events etc etc.

And you should also focus on building that key trust so you can maintain a long term relationship that's profitable for both of you.

You require far less infrastructure, your overheads are usually much, much lower and your nett profits are usually far higher.

Remember we all procrastinate and we can be very slow at making a buying decision.

How many times have you read a sales letter and thought "This is great I should buy this!"

But for some reason you don't order immediately.

Then a few hours later or the next day you're thinking "I wonder if I should buy this" and the doubts begin to come in.

"Is it really worth it? Will I use it?"

And a day or two later you've completely forgotten about it. No sale.



Here's the vital point.

In many cases the product you were thinking of buying may have been genuinely useful to you and if the marketer selling it was smart enough to give you a real incentive with a deadline to buy now your chance of acting immediately would have shot up.

If your product or service is genuinely going to help your prospect you need to give them a compelling reason to act right now.

One of my most successful marketing strategies online has been the 48 hour offer.

You offer a special deal to your prospects and clients that expires in 48 hours.

And you email them 2 or 3 times in that 48 hour period to make the offer and let them now they must act NOW to claim it.

Deadlines like this can dramatically increase response rates.

When Should You Use Email?

In this video marketing master Dan Kennedy points out the limits of email...spam issues, emails not being delivered, emails being deleted and compares sending a promotion by email to sending an offline mailing by bulk mail...



Obviously email is a hugely powerful marketing tool but Dan makes some very important points that raise the issue "When should you use email for marketing?"

Here are some guidelines that may help:

1. Use email when you're selling products where the price is so low other marketing methods like direct mail fail to return a profit.

In this situation you may also want to look at the possibility of devising a package, bundle or membership plan that allows you to charge a more substantial sum of money upfront.


2. Use email as an integrated part of your marketing strategy combining it with direct mail, telemarketing, fax marketing, postcard marketing etc etc.

Email is especially useful for delivering information quickly and frequently at no cost.

On the other hand it usually has a very poor conversion rate compared to direct mail and telemarketing.

Incidentally if you have a prior relationship with your client telemarketing often has an exceptionally high response rate.

You can use the unique power of email to deliver information quickly and frequently to pre-educate clients before you contact them by mail or telephone.

Emails that include or lead to high quality information targeted to your prospects can help build your credibility and trust with clients and prospects.


3. When it's profitable.

There's nothing wrong with sending emails to sell products and services as long as you're not relying on that as your only method of making money.

In this free video Dan Kennedy explains how he discovered the power of sending a sequence of 3 letters 15 days apart to make the maximum sales (this confession from a millionaire many times over may surprise you)...



Dan is so right about a sequence of emails increasing sales.

It becomes even more powerful when combined with a deadline.

One of the most effective email sequences I've tested is the 48 hour offer.

You send the first email telling your prospect they have just 48 hours to claim a special offer which might include a special price, special bonuses, payment plans etc etc.

Then you send a second email 24 hours later telling them they have only 24 hours left to claim their bonuses, special offer etc etc.

This is especially powerful if you know your email list checks their email once or more every day.

Every list and every niche is different.

If they check their email less frequently you may give them 7 days or 14 days and send out 3 emails over that time period.

But the 48 hour offer has brought the best result for me and many of my clients.

A Powerful Offline Free Trial Offer

In the city where I live there's a very successful privately owned menswear store.

This store has been in business several decades and while he does have several staff the owner is still personally involved in running it and dealing with his clients.

Recently I was in this store and I overheard the owner talking to one of his male customers and his wife.

The gentleman was trying on shirts and saying "Julie's been telling me I have to come in and get some trendy shirts."

The store owners reply to this was pure gold so pay attention.

He said "Any time Julie wants to take half a dozen shirts home with her for you to try on she's very welcome."



Listening to a successful business owner who's been trading for longer than most internet marketers have been alive can give you some amazing gems.

This store owner knew his market.

He knew that most of his best clients weren't men but the WIVES of men.

In the city where I live most guys are happy to wonder around in shorts with the backsides falling out of them and shirts with grease stains and holes everywhere (I'm not joking. We're VERY laid back here in the tropics).

Astonishingly our wives and partners aren't so eager to embrace this laid back tropical look.

So we're constantly being dragged into one clothing store after another.

And most guys where I live really HATE trying on clothes.

We hate the embarrassing exercise of undressing then putting on the "latest fashion" and parading yourself in front of your spouse and a female sales assistant (with her vacant stares and empty assurances that the shirt you're trying on looks fantastic even though you're certain it would make even Brad Pitt look like an idiot).

And we hate even more that after this whole humiliating experience we know we're going to be out some serious money for clothing we're really only buying to keep a spouse happy.



Now let's compare that to my wife bringing home half a dozen shirts from the menswear store.

She says "When you get a chance you should try on these shirts Bruce at the menswear let me bring home for you."

I get to try on the shirts in the privacy of my bedroom.

I can show them to my wife without feeling like an idiot.

And I have all the time in the world. I'm at home. I don't need to make an appointment or get back to work or pick up the kids in 15 minutes.

I'm far more likely to fall in love with 3 or 4 shirts.

And the very savvy owner of that menswear store is far more likely to make a whole lot more money off me AND keep me as a loyal client for many years to come.



How does this relate to your business or the sales copy you're writing?

It's simple.

First the shirts are a "free trial" offer.

Offering free trials or samples is a very powerful way to overcome objections to buying. You bypass them altogether by just giving your prospect free use of the product for a defined period of time.

Car salesmen sometimes use this technique.

They let you try out a new car for a week to see if it's right for you.

After a week of driving around in "your" new car you get attached to it's features and benefits.

You really don't want to go back to your old worn out car.

Obviously you want to prequalify prospects if you're giving expensive test samples like a new car or half a dozen shirts worth over $500.



You may have heard of the 80/20 rule of business where 80% of your profits come from just 20% of your clients.

Being aware of who your best clients are (and who you can trust) and providing them with special trials and offers like the "trial shirt" offer or the "trial car" offer can multiply your profits fast.



But even more important than the trial offer is the deep understanding that went behind the offer.

The owner of this menswear store had thought through who his prospects were, what their buying experience was like, how they felt during that whole experience...

And he found a way to make that whole experience far more pleasant and enjoyable for everyone involved.

The wife gets to shop in his store and pick the clothes she thinks will work for her husband. I know it's a cliche but women love shopping.

The husband gets to try on the clothes in the comfort of his own home.

And there's no risk for them. If they don't like the clothes the wife just drops them back into the store.



The questions you want to ask yourself: "What is my prospect's experience like buying my product or service?"

"What can I do to improve that experience?"

"What can I do to make that whole buying experience a pleasure instead of an ordeal?"

"How can I make it dead easy for my prospect to make that critical buying decision?"

The answers to these questions can give you valuable ideas you can test to improve the way you deal with prospects and clients.

Ryan Deiss Wholesale Traffic System

Should you "save money" by paying "pennies" for overseas copywriters?

Recently Ryan Deiss released an excellent report where he explains how to sell low priced reports to generate a list using pay per click advertising.

He calls this method creating a series of "Self Liquidating Offers".

Put simply "self-liquidating" means each report pays for its own advertising and you get to keep the profits from immediate upsells, back end sales and the email list of buyers you create.

The main thrust of this "self liquidating offers" system is to have multiple reports and multiple sales pages for those reports all designed for a specific set of keywords you're bidding on.

This report is a lead in to Ryan Deiss' Wholesale Traffic System.

There was one comment in the report that struck a nerve with some professional copywriters.

Ryan explained how a pay per click expert he was working with and learning from, Mr X, "paid overseas copywriters pennies to write the sales letters for these products".

My response to this strategy as a professional copywriter...



I think you get what you pay for.

If you hire someone whose second language is English and you pay "pennies" for a sales letter you are simply throwing money away.

I can see some logic in doing this to begin with AS A TEST in the system Ryan is talking about.

He's driving traffic through pay per click to multiple niched sales letters selling multiple niched reports.

But once you know you have good traffic and it will convert you should hire a skilled copywriter to double or triple your conversion with excellent copy.

Think about it...



If a sales letter makes you just $60 in sales every day that's $21,900 in sales a year.

A good copywriter will get you 2-20 times the response of a poor copywriter who charges "pennies" (that's without taking into account the other valuable advice you get from a skilled copywriter).

But lets be conservative and say a good copywriter just doubles your conversion over your cheap copywriter.

That's an extra $21,900 in sales a year.

And since in this case we're talking about digitally delivered reports the nett profit just on those sales will be $20,000.

Then you get all those extra high quality leads (paying clients), the immediate backend sales from upsells and long term back end sales.

According to a recent survey the average online copywriter is charging US$2,500 to $3,500 for a short online sales letter.

Wouldn't it be worth paying $2,500 to make an extra $20,000+ a year?



Just in case you're wondering what kind of conversion is possible with low priced reports if you use exceptional online sales copy.

Ryan talks about selling reports for $5 to $10 and getting a 2.5% to 11% conversion.

I recently released two reports for $19.99:

Report one had a statistically significant conversion of 35%. (Okay I admit it. That's the highest response rate I've ever got for an online sales letter).

Report two had a statistically significant conversion of 15%.

So double the price and several times the response rate.

I've repeatedly had response rates in the past for reports in the $10-$20 range around the 20% mark.

Good copy pays.

3. Learn about how to increase the profits in an offline business with online marketing.

I strongly suggest you read anything from marketing masters Jay Abraham and Dan Kennedy to ground yourself in OFFLINE marketing fundamentals.
