Any Excuse Will Do: Reason Why Free Video

Did you know we all have inbuilt, unconscious patterns affecting our behavior?

And one of these patterns is complying to a request when we're given a reason or excuse.

What's funny is it doesn't actually matter what the reason is...it can be REALLY stupid.

But as long as we get a reason we'll often do what someone asks.

Watch this 3 minute video as an Australian comedian uses a whole pile of crazy reasons to get people to give up handicapped seating, car parks, even get a complete stranger to let him sit on his lap...




Put simply when someone asks us to do a favor for them we're more likely to do it if they give us a reason.

But it's not the reason that matters...it's just giving ANY reason after asking for the favor.

It's a pattern of behavior we follow unconsciously.

In a 1978 study Harvard psychologist Ellen Langer tested this inbuilt pattern 3 ways...

1. She asked people in line to use a copying machine this question:
"Excuse me, I have five pages. May I use the Xerox machine because I'm in a rush?"

94% of those asked said yes.


2. She asked:
"Excuse me, I have five pages. May I use the Xerox machine?"

Without being given a reason only 60% of the people waiting in line said yes.

A massive drop of 34%! But you'll love the third test...



3. She asked:
"Excuse me, I have five pages. May I use the Xerox machine because I have to make some copies?"

93% said yes!


The key is not the quality of the reason it's the fact that you give one.

In copywriting we use the term "reason why".

Why are you giving such a great deal...

BECAUSE I need to fund a new extension on my furniture warehouse without going to the bank.

BECAUSE my wife is driving me crazy about this old stock filling up my garage.

BECAUSE my daughter needs new braces and my health insurance won't cover them.



Give your prospects a "reason why" in your copy and you increase believability and response.
