How To Film A Video

The 10 minute video below reveals some of the most important keys to filming your own video...either to put online or to create your own DVD for an information product.

I really wish I had seen this video before I started making my first videos. It would have saved me days of wasted filming.

The tips are pure gold...

Here's a breakdown of what this video reveals:

# The video equipment you should use (don't skimp on your camera and try to get a video camera with 3 color chips).

# Use a good wireless microphone.

# Get a good tripod with a quick release lever.

# Consider using artificial lighting to get the best possible picture especially if you're filming indoors.

# Your video is most likely to be made up of you speaking to the camera ("A" roll) and of pictures and videos without you in the picture ("B" roll).

# Use 3-5 second shots inside your video to make it more interesting. You can use images or short video shots of physical objects, scenery etc etc.

# Use different camera angles to make your video and images more interesting.

# When you film (especially outdoors) be aware of external noises like lawn mowers, trucks and aeroplanes that can destroy your audio.

# Have a script before you film where you've planned out where you need to speak on camera and what images and shots you need to fill in the rest of your video.

# When you write your script avoid using too much "talking head" of you in front of the camera. Devise your script so you have plenty of interesting images and shots filling up the space.

# Plan what you will wear on your video. Never wear a white shirt or a flashy shirt with a pile of different colors. Shirts like this don't record well on video.

# Smile and be energetic when you're being filmed otherwise you'll look like a zombie.

# Move your head around when you speak. It feels unnatural but if you don't bob your head around when you speak on camera you'll look really weird.

# Use props to keep your hands occupied when you speak. You'll look far more natural, it's more interesting for viewers and it will stop you from looking awkward with your hand movements and stop you from hitting your microphone with your hands.

# If you're pointing at objects in close ups be sure to clean and trim your fingernails.

# Above all show that you're genuinely passionate about your subject and have some fun!
